Photodynamic therapy is an advanced treatment for specific skin conditions, that combines laser treatment with a photosensing solution, which is applied to the skin prior to treatment. The photosensitiser makes cells more receptive to light and when exposed to the laser creates a form of oxygen that kills nearby cells

• What is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) used for?
  PDT is used for a range of specific skin conditions, including but not limited to the following. Our doctors will advise you at our first consultation if this or other treatments are suitable for your specific skin conditions.

The Procedure & Results
Our initial consultation will always include a discussion between the patient and one of our doctors regarding the treatment to be undertaken.

The actual procedure starts with a skin preparation similar to microdermabrasion., then a product known as ALA (aminolevulinic acid) being applied. A waiting period of around 45 minutes is allowed to elapse, during which time the ALA is taken up by the cells and converted to a photosensetiser. Our doctor then applies a lime light to the area to be treated.
 
Within days the exposed skin will scab over and then flake away. Within a few days to a few weeks the treatment area will be healed leaving healthy skin behind. In many cases as single treatment is enough, with repeat treatments used for more extensive skin problems.

Precautions
After treatment the patient will need to avoid excessive sunlight for approximately two days.  Significant side effects are not common but can occur on occasion, your doctor will discuss these prior to treatment commencing.
