Digital Skin Imaging & Digital Mole Scanning - Phoenix Wellness Clinic
Detect and prevent melanoma before it's too late!
DermDOC image analysis
DermDOC image analysis (Digital Mole Scanning) assists in the early detection of melanomas and
non melanomas skin cancers. Using digital imaging techniques such as DermDOC
provides peace of mind and can reduce unnecessary excisions.
Our technology uses a specialised camera and computer examine and digitally record images of your skin, and in particular moles. Moles and other skin lesions can also change over time, and the accurate recording and monitoring of these changes over time will ensure any problems are identified early, which will allow treatment to begin before problems become serious.
What is the benefit of digital mole scanning?
Digital mole scanning magnifies a mole 20 and 40 times and uses specialised light to look through
your skin and see the mole structure. This makes detecting melanomas easier and means fewer
unnecessary operations.
The digital mole scanning computer permanently records and stores images of your moles along with
your doctor’s diagnosis for a permanent lifetime record. This means your moles can be monitored
over the years, and allows our doctors to detect even subtle changes of moles over time.
Studies at the Sydney melanoma unit at Royal Prince Albert hospital have shown that early examination
and detection of these subtle changes allow melanomas that have no other clinical features to be
detected much earlier. This early detection increases the likelihood of appropriate management,
resulting in greater chance of cure of early melanoma.
How important is early detection?
It is very important to remove a melanoma early. This is because “thin” melanomas
have a very good prognosis (96% cure rates.) Therefore early detection is vital
in controlling the disease.
Who has a high risk of developing melanoma?
The most important common risk factor for developing melanoma is having lots of moles.
Other important risk factors include a family history of melanoma, a personal history
of melanoma or other types of skin cancer, freckled or fair skin (skin that tends to
burn rather than tan), and frequent recreational sun exposure. While melanoma can
occur in childhood it is uncommon before puberty. Melanoma is also uncommon in
Aboriginal, Asian, and African races.
Skin Cancer Facts
Over 380,000 Australians are treated for skin cancer each year – that’s over 1000 people a
day. Of these 380,000, over 1600 Australians die from skin cancer each year.
This gives Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.
Almost all melanomas and other skin cancers can be cured if diagnosed early, however a
late diagnosis can unfortunately be fatal.
